We all have inspiration in our lives to pursue a passion, and oftentimes that inspiration is borne out of necessity. Well, that’s the story of On The Go Bites. My husband and I have 3 active sons who can plow through food like no tomorrow. My brother used to say that he wanted to buy stock in the grocery stores I visited. When the kids were growing up it was a constant battle to provide an energizing breakfast, satisfying snack and get a healthy, filling meal on the table after a long day of work. I started the blog to chronicle some of the ideas to keep me organized, but also to help others in the same situation. Not that all of you have kids, but I would venture to say that 99.99999% of you are crazy busy, love food and nutrition and like to cook…………not clean up, but cook. Haven’t figured out how to conquer the “clean up” phase yet. We all have our own time challenges and at On The Go Bites our mission is to make YOUR life easier. We share our tips, tricks and hacks to get you out the door easier, faster and less frazzled with quick and easy meals.
As the blog has grown, my two oldest sons are on their own and cooking for themselves. So that’s changed my view somewhat. Meaning, these meals need to use readily available products but have twists to make them special and easy instructions for either beginning cooks or those that don’t like fuss. The meals and snacks still need to be delicious and can be made quickly, easily and/or be frozen and reheated at a moment’s notice. My three boys, Ben, Cort and Drew are great recipe testers and give feedback as to how I can streamline the cooking process or simplify the ingredients. My youngest, 15 years old, is in high school likes a grab and go breakfast as he runs out the door for school and nutritious snacks that pack well in a back pack…..or smelly gear bag for baseball, football or basketball. Snacks are so important for these kids and buying the packaged convenience food isn’t always the best choice, at least not all of the time.
We are always open to improving the website and to solving a kitchen problem that you may have. I love connecting with all of you and hearing about your challenges, strengths and tips on how to make getting out the door easier. OUT THE DOOR IN MINUTES
The purpose of On The Go Bites recipes is for portable, easy to handle food, this usually means quick and easy, sometimes it does not necessarily mean fast. Sometimes prep is only 15 minutes but the cook time is several hours, good point would be a slow cooker recipe. If a recipe takes longer than 20 minutes or so then we supply you with freezing tips so that it can be ready at a moment’s notice by pulling the treat out of the freezer and reheating in a toaster oven or microwave. If you want a recipe that is completed in 15 minutes or less then go to the Out The Door In Minutes section. These “recipes” are more ideas than complex recipes, but who doesn’t need a little nudge every now and then to get out of the rut of the same old thing. Or worse, cruising through a drive through for a sodium filled breakfast and land fill packaging!
Now that you are armed with Grab ‘n Go ideas, what is the best way to store, reheat and package these snacks and meals? The HOW TO section gives you ideal tips on how and when to freeze food, the best way to reheat them and unique wrapping/packaging ideas to keep them neat and easy to eat.
For those of us who have kids, the need for snacks that can double as mini meals is a daily dilemma. Whether it’s a snack that needs to sit in the backpack all day until baseball practice or dance rehearsal, something tasty for snack time at school or nourishment between a double shift waiting tables, ON THE GO BITES provides you with ideas beyond the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Don’t get me wrong, the PB&J is a long time staple for a reason. But all of us want some variety in life.
Whether it’s Gluten Free, Protein Power or Low Carb, we provide those tags so that you can find just what you are looking for. We’ll be adding more diets like Paleo, Dairy Free and Vegetarian. Please bear with us as we are new in Q4 of 2016 and are growing as quickly as we can.
